New Chairman for NFF Board
By NFF staffApril 25, 2009
The National Forest Foundation (NFF) – a national nonprofit dedicated to the conservation and restoration of America’s National Forests and Grasslands, chartered by the U.S. Congress – announced that John Hendricks, founder and chairman of Discovery Communications, was elected chairman of the NFF Board of Directors at the NFF’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C., on April 25.
Hendricks, who has served on the NFF board since December 2007, succeeds David Bell, operating advisor for Pegasus Capital Advisors, in the NFF chairmanship. National Forest Foundation President William Possiel said, “David Bell has been an outstanding chairman helping to build the scope and scale of NFF projects and programs.” After a total of eight years on the board and five years as chairman, Bell will continue on the board as vice chairman.
John Hendricks created Discovery Channel in 1985 as the first cable network in the United States designed to provide high quality documentary programming, enabling people to explore their world and satisfy their curiosity. Since then, Discovery has grown to become the world’s number one nonfiction media company, with over 100 networks reaching more than 1.5 billion subscribers in 170 countries.
Hendricks serves on a number of nonprofit boards; he is a director on the United States Olympic Committee, the American Film Institute, the James Madison Council of the Library of Congress, and the University of Maryland College Park Foundation Board of Trustees. He and his wife, Maureen, operate two charitable foundations – the John and Maureen Hendricks Charitable Foundation and the John S. Hendricks Family Foundation.
“The NFF engages Americans in caring for and ensuring the future of our 193-million-acre National Forest System, a system of public lands like no other in the world,” Hendricks said. “I am proud to lead this stellar organization into the next phase of service toward enhancing and conserving the earth’s precious resources.”
Hendricks takes over at an exciting time for the National Forest Foundation. The NFF has recently launched a national conservation campaign – Treasured Landscapes, Unforgettable Experiences – focused on restoring the health and resilience of our forests, while also restoring Americans’ connection to their great system of public lands.
“Throughout his life and career, John Hendricks has demonstrated a deep concern for the natural world. Through his work at Discovery, he has made the public more aware of environmental issues and the importance of protecting natural systems for present and future generations,” Possiel said. “We are honored to have him take over as chairman of our board, where he will lead our efforts as we take on the increasingly complex conservation and restoration challenges across our National Forest System.”
