Friends of the Forest Day
Riverside restoration project for a Friends of the Forest Day along the Metolius River in the Deschutes National Forest. National Public Lands Day, September 23, 2011.

National Forests comprise nearly 25% of the state of Oregon and the benefits are endless: clean air and water, quality outdoor recreation experiences, economic benefit to local communities, scenic views and vibrant wild places.

Current Projects

On the Deschutes National Forest, a Treasured Landscapes campaign site, we are working to restore the Whychus Creek and Metolius River watershed through reducing erosion, increasing riparian vegetation and enhancing fish habitat. We are working closely with communities, conservation organizations and the U.S. Forest Service for a truly collaborative approach to restoring the region

What's Happening

In celebration of Earth Day, we are hosting a Friends of the Forest Day on the Mt. Hood National Forest where volunteers of all ages can help with riverside salmon habitat restoration. Please register for this free event taking place on Saturday, April 12th 2012.

Join us in Sisters, Oregon on Saturday June 16th, 2012 for NFF’s third annual Ride for Two Rivers a cycling event which raises funds for on-the-ground conservation and restoration projects in the Metolius River and Whychus Creek watersheds in central Oregon. This event with our partner Cycle Oregon is not to be missed! Check back soon for registration and event details.

June 28th, 2012 is the fourth annual Plein Air Paint Out along the spectacular Metolius River near Sisters, Oregon. Plein Air painting is an opportunity for artist to paint in the open air of the outdoors, inspired by nature and its stunning views. All artists interested in participating, please contact Karly Hedrick at 541-549-0251 or via email at khedrick@nationalforests.org.

Rediscovering Whychus Creek

Trail construction and restoration work to help manage access and restore habitat on lower Whychus Creek Wild and Scenic River Corridor on the Sisters Ranger District is underway. A Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council (COIC) crew and the Forest Service have been hard at work constructing the hiking trail, obliterating user made trails, campsites, and fire pits and transplanting plants to restore impacted streamside areas.  Check out a short video of the work and volunteers here.
