After two centuries of sustained agricultural, industrial and residential development, the sweeping vistas that greeted early settlers to northern Illinois – vast tallgrass prairies dotted with bison, drained by meandering prairie creeks, and home to an impossible diversity of plants and animals – are today rarer than rainforests, making up much less than 1% of the Prairie State.
An hour from Chicago in Will County, Illinois, Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie (Midewin) represents the best chance in the region to restore the full array of species typical of a tallgrass prairie, one of the most diverse and endangered ecosystems on Earth.
The National Forest Foundation (NFF) and the Wetlands Initiative (TWI) are leading an effort to return Midewin back to a thriving tallgrass prairie. Our multi-year scope of work includes managing invasive vegetation, replanting native grasses and wildflowers, and removing infrastructure from Midewin’s past use as a U.S. Army arsenal. Since the start of this exciting project we have treated hundreds of acres, replacing invasive plants with native tallgrass prairie species and removing 21 old ammunition storage bunkers.
The National Forest Foundation is thrilled to work with the below-listed partners to achieve our restoration goals at Midewin.
