Wetterhorn Basin Trail Reconstruction Phase I, Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests, Colorado

December 8, 2024

The U.S. Forest Service and National Forest Foundation (NFF) are working together to implement projects associated with the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA). Wetterhorn Basin Trail is a U.S. Forest Service system trail on the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests. This trail is a popular and scenic route leading into a remote, backcountry part of the Uncompahgre Wilderness. Phase I of reconstruction includes design and build for a major trail reroute where a mass landslide event compromised the sustainability and accessibility of the current alignment. The reroute project is located just beneath Coxcomb Pass, within the first 3 miles of the trail from the West Fork Cimmaron Trailhead.
