Maureen Bookwalter
Wildfire Resilience DirectorMaureen “Mo” Bookwalter joined the National Forest Foundation (NFF) in 2026 as Wildfire Resilience Director. In this role, she leads the organization’s efforts to reduce wildfire risk through proactive fuels reduction, cross-boundary partnerships, and community-based programs that protect forests, watersheds, and communities.
Prior to joining NFF, she served with the United States Forest Service (USFS) as the Northern Region’s Cross Boundary Coordinator and later in the Washington Office, where she held Chief of Staff positions for both State, Private, and Tribal Forestry and Fire and Aviation Management.
Before her federal service, Mo worked for the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, leading initiatives focused on wood utilization and public-private partnerships that advanced landscape-scale forest management. Earlier in her career, she served as Program Director for a community-based nonprofit in northwest Montana, where she developed a passion for connecting community needs with meaningful economic and ecological outcomes.
She holds a Master of Science in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana. Based in Missoula, Montana, she enjoys spending time with her two teenage daughters, running and biking mountain trails, gardening, and cheering on local high school sports teams.
