Caddo-LBJ Grasslands Vegetation Management Caddo and Lyndon B. Johnson National Grasslands, Texas
Over the past several years, NFF and its partner, the USDA Forest Service (USFS) have been treating encroaching Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperas virginiana) and other hardwoods on the Caddo – Lyndon Baines Johnson Grasslands (CLBJNG) to improve water availability, reduce basal area and return closed canopy woodlands to oak savannah.
The work is comprised of vegetation management in mixed complexity stands via handcrews on the Caddo – LBJ National Grasslands. The primary focus will be thinning and falling cedar of various heights and diameter at breast height (DBH) along with thinning various hardwood species between 1-to-8-inch DBH. Debris and slash should be lopped and scattered to prevent biomass accumulation and ladder fuels. Alternate proposals utilizing machinery such as skid steers may be considered provided large diameter cedars are sheared, felled or girdled.
