We are planting the future of our forests.

Our National Forests need help. We’re reforesting thousands of acres damaged by wildfire and disease, planting native and ecologically appropriate trees that will provide clean water and air, improve habitat for wildlife, and support our climate for future generations.

Why We Plant
Clean Water
National Forests are the largest source of fresh water in the United States. Reforestation slows soil erosion, ensuring our forests can filter and supply the water that we all depend on.
Resilient Forests
By planting the right species, reforestation helps make National Forests more resilient to future challenges like climate change and wildfire.
Wildlife Habitat
Nearly one third of federally listed threatened and endangered species depend on National Forests. The trees we plant provide critical habitat.
Fresh Air
As trees grow and consume air, they remove harmful pollutants from the air. Reforestation helps re-establish forest cover and improve our “natural air filter.”

How We Plant

We work with forestry experts from the U.S. Forest Service to plant the right trees in the right places, giving them the best chance for survival. And we are involved in every step in the reforestation process—not just the moment a tree gets put into the ground.

We help the Forest Service increase the supply of native and appropriate seed for future reforestation by collecting cones from healthy forests or seed orchards, building diverse seed banks adapted to local conditions.

Seeds are then extracted and grown in a nursery for 1-2 years before they are transported back to the forest for planting. The NFF is helping improve efficiencies at nurseries to increase the number of seedlings ready to be planted in the ground.

We work with professional planting crews across the country to restore our National Forests. Since 2001, the NFF has planted nearly 70 million seedlings.

As seedlings grow, our partners at the Forest Service continue to monitor them and perform needed maintenance, giving them the best chance of maturing into healthy trees.
