Northern Region Program

The National Forests of the Northern Region are made up of towering mountain peaks, glacial carved valleys, deep cold lakes, abundant forests, and flowing rivers. These forests offer many benefits while serving as crucial wildlife habitats, ensuring clean drinking water for our communities, and providing spectacular recreational opportunities for visitors. The NFF is dedicated to restoring these National Forests and ensuring their protection for the benefit of future generations.

Today, visitors and locals alike explore its trails, lakes, and scenic byways, enjoying activities such as hiking, fishing, hunting, and backcountry camping. The region is also critical for timber production, watershed protection, and maintaining biodiversity, striking a balance between sustainable resource use and preservation of its natural beauty.

In the Northern Region, the NFF is addressing wildfire risk, youth workforce development, and finding solutions for home heating needs on tribal reservations.

Northern Region National Forests

  • 9 National Forests
  • 4 National Grasslands
  • 25 Million Acres

Working with multiple forests across Montana, and Northern Idaho, the NFF provides support to the U.S. Forest Service by providing additional capacity, funding, and community connections. From creating healthier forests and protecting communities to restoring the landscape after wildfire to improving recreation infrastructure, NFF strives to engage communities and enhance forests through our work.

Through our various initiatives throughout the region, NFF’s Northern Region Program plays an instrumental role in bolstering the overall health and sustainability of the region’s forests.
