Restoring the Rio Guadalupe Headwaters

In the headwaters of the Rio Guadalupe, an important tributary of the Rio Grande River, partners are using low-tech, process-based restoration to heal degraded streams and floodplains. This ongoing project focuses on improving water quality and quantity, restoring riparian habitat, and rebuilding resilient native Cuthroat Trout systems across the Santa Fe National Forest.

A Watershed-Scale Restoration Effort

The Rio Guadalupe Headwaters Restoration Project is an ongoing, multi-year effort across several tributaries in northern New Mexico. These areas have been deeply incised over time and are important stream sources of the Rio Grande River.

Working in partnership with the Santa Fe National Forest and Rio Grande Return, this effort is working to restore stream and floodplain function across several acres of riparian habitat. The work is phased over time to allow the landscape to respond naturally and to build long-term resilience across the watershed.

What Low-Tech Process-Based Restoration Looks Like

Low-Tech Process-Based Restoration (LTPBR) focuses on working with natural processes rather than against them. Crews often install simple, hand-built structures using locally available materials to slow water, spread flows across the floodplain, and raise the water table.

This work includes building beaver dam analogs and large woody debris structures, planting native willow and cottonwood, installing erosion control features, and constructing wildlife-friendly exclosures that allow vegetation to recover. Together, these actions help streams regain natural meanders, stabilize banks, and support healthier riparian ecosystems.

Why This Work Matters in Northern New Mexico

Healthy floodplains store water longer in the landscape, improving late-season streamflows, groundwater recharge, and habitat for fish and wildlife. In the Rio Guadalupe Headwaters, these improvements also reduce sediment entering downstream rivers and help buffer landscapes from drought, wildfire, and extreme runoff events.

These efforts in New Mexico have already demonstrated measurable benefits, including improved channel stability, increased wetland vegetation, and rising water tables in treated areas. Continued restoration will build on this progress over time, creating healthier streams and more resilient watersheds for both the immediate forested areas and communities downstream.
