Big Jack East Project

The Big Jack East Project

The Big Jack East project is located in Placer County, California and south of the Town of Truckee. Big Jack East is a collaborative project between the United States Forest Service and the National Forest Foundation that was designed to treat approximately 2,000 acres on National Forest System lands. Action is needed:

Reduce fuel loadings and the risk of wildfire in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) immediately south of Truckee.
Create conditions that would improve forest resiliency to fire, insects, disease, drought and climate change.

Project Updates

August 2021

All operations on the Big Jack East Project were completed on August 23rd, 2021.

April 2021

Mastication operations resumed during the week of April 25th.

November 2020

The National Forest Foundation, in partnership with the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation and the Tahoe National Forest, has just released a video on the Big Jack East Project. This video explains the immediate need for Big Jack East and highlights the Project's key phases--check it out below! August 2020

In an effort to facilitate safe and efficient operations in the BJE Project area, Forest Supervisor Eli Ilano has signed a Forest Order closing the BJE Closure Area effective August 24, 2020 - October 15, 2020. The BJE Project Closure Area boundary begins at the intersection of Forest Road No. 06 and Forest Trail No. 16E14, then continues east to its intersection with the Forest boundary, then continues south, east, south and east along the Forest boundary, then continues south for 2.53 miles along the Forest boundary, then continues due west for 1 mile and then south .13 miles along the Forest boundary to its intersection with Forest Road No. 06, then continues north along Forest Road No. 06 back to the starting point, as shown on this map: Big Jack East Closure Map.
